Stencilfied Journal

Artist Tina Walker started the group The Stencilfied Journal. There are not too many rules other than we only use StencilGirl stencils. Each week Tina posts a prompt that members interpret any way they want. Everyone is free to interpret the prompt in their own way. There's no right or wrong, no judgement, only positivity and encouragement. Here's my week by week artwork so far, along with the corresponding weekly prompt:

Stenciled page with circles added. Face stencil by Matus deMeng with accent stencils by Mika.

Journal page hanging out my NYC apartment window
This page hung outside my apartment window for many weeks. Stencils by Lafluer and Mika.

The leaf is on the right center toward the top. I used heavy matte medium to adhere it to the page and preserve it. I added assorted Lafluer stencils and my own hand carved stamps with black ink, plus white handwritten thoughts.

Royal blue is my least favorite color.  Stencils by Kalbach, Lafluer and Mika were used.
To create this design, a Pam Carricker face stencil was flipped and mirrored. Stencils by Lafluer and Mika were used for the neck, crown, shoulders and earrings.

The holes were poked with an awl, then enlarged with scissors. Black ink was added on the edges and a little gold embossing powder. Hot pink silk was placed on the back of the page to accentuate the holes. Stencils by Gwen Lafluer.

This journal page was ripped up.
This shows the ripped strips and other elements that were used to create the new page.
The final journal spread, using the ripped portions of the page plus gelli printed deli paper and nuvo drops. Stencils by Lafluer, Mika and Sporn.

The face outline was done by pulling white glue through a Matus deMeng stencil.
The halos were also created with glue and layers of paint and embossing powder were added on top. Halo and dress were created with stencils by Lafluer.
The face outline and hair were done by pulling white glue through a Matus deMeng stencil. Halo created with Gwen Lafluer stencils; dress created with Michelle Ward stencil.

My daughter Amanda chose the color and stencils for this page and did the entire design without my input. Stencils by Matus de Meng, Gwen Lafluer and Evans.

This was a quick sketch of my idea for documenting my day.
This journal spread illustrates my daily life in NYC, getting the subway in the morning via the Chrysler Building at 42nd Street, traveling on the subway to the Bronx to my stop at 149th Street. Stencils by Lafluer, Mika, and Evans.

This page hung outside my apartment window for several weeks, weathering the storms very well except for a tear on the bottom right from rubbing on the cement and bricks. I added another layer of Gwen Lafluer's StencilClub fluer de lis compass rose in aqua on top of the original design.

Front and back cover before the coffee bath. Stencils by Carricker, Lafluer and Mika.
I protected the inner pages with a baggie while soaking the covers in a coffee bath.
The spine and pages that had not been painted soaked up the coffee.
The pages came unglued from the cover and the journal had to be reassembled.
I reinforced the book, adding strips of my own fabric inside, then clamping it until the book dried

I painted my clog bottom with magenta acrylic.
I randomly stepped on some pages that had been covered with black and gold gesso.
I added a vintage image of a woman, stencils by Nathalie Kalback and Gwen Lafluer, plus dots and my own handcarved spiral-dot stamp.

Lines were stenciled in the background, along with significant dates and notes. On top, I traced my hand, added stencils with white paint, pale green paint and embossing powder and stamped my favorite Kaitlyn Walsh quote with mini alphabet stamps.

The background was a mop up page of leftover paint. I added paint skins and stencils over it, then added the stenciled envelope. Inside the window of the envelope is some "scrappy fabric" that I had been saving for a long time. Stencils by Gwen Lafluer and Carolyn Dube.
Background stencils in yellow and aqua. The note to myself is inside the folded paper which has a stencil of Talaya, Goddess of the Rain, with Jane Davenport washi tape. Handwritten words plus Julie Balzer stamps were added to the page.

On the right, folk art style hearts were drawn and stencils from the September 2018 Stencil Club "Caves and Ladders" by Carol Wiebe were added, along with white Nuvo Drops, buttons, a Tim Holtz paper doll and Dresden Trim gold wings. On the left, more of the Caves and Ladders stencil in shades of pink and white, more Tim Holtz paper dolls, gold wings and a favorite quote.

I’ve loved each and every one of you pages but they are really quite something all together. I’m in awe of your journal. You’ve kept up with each and every prompt while I’ve skipped a few....
